Top 7 Natural Homeopathic Remedies for Ovarian Cysts

What are Ovarian Cysts?

Sacs of fluid that form within a woman’s ovaries are known as ovarian cysts. A woman may develop a cyst in one ovary or both the ovaries at the same time. Ovarian cysts occur very commonly in women of childbearing age, and are less common in females after menopause. Homeopathic medicine for ovarian cysts works to treat the symptoms and also dissolve the cysts safely with time.

Ovaries and Their Function

Homeopathic Remedies for Ovarian Cyst

Ovaries are two oval-shaped gonads which make up an important part of the female reproductive system. The ovaries are found on either side of the uterus and have two major functions – production of egg (ovum) for fertilization, and the production of hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
Every month, an ovum (egg) is released from the mature follicle. If the ovum is fertilized by a sperm, it leads to pregnancy. If the ovum doesn’t get fertilized, then it breaks down and is shed along with the lining of the uterus in the form of menstrual bleeding.

Causes and Types of Ovarian Cysts

The cause behind an ovarian cyst depends upon the type of cyst. Ovarian cysts are of different kinds, the most common being functional cysts, dermoid cysts, endometriomas, and cystadenomas. Another condition, known as Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) also leads to the formation of cysts on the ovaries.

Functional Ovarian Cysts

Functional cysts are the most common and harmless ovarian cysts that tend to disappear on their own within two to three menstrual cycles. Functional cysts are linked to the menstrual cycle.
Functional cysts are further divided into two types – follicular cyst and corpus luteum cyst.

a) Follicular Cyst: In a menstruating female, every month a follicle in the ovary matures, and it contains an egg. This follicle ruptures to release the egg (a process known as ovulation). If for any reason the follicle does not rupture and release the egg, then it swells up into a fluid-filled follicular cyst.

b) Corpus Luteum Cyst: During the menstrual cycle, the ovum (egg) is released from the follicle during ovulation. The follicle then gets converted to a mass known as ‘corpus luteum’ that secretes the hormone progesterone.
If the ovum gets fertilized with sperm (that is, a pregnancy occurs), then the corpus luteum keeps secreting progesterone to maintain the pregnancy in the early stages. If pregnancy doesn’t happen, then this corpus luteum stops secreting progesterone and disappears. In some cases, the corpus luteum doesn’t disappear even in the absence of a pregnancy. It then gets filled with fluid or blood and persists in the ovary in the form of a corpus luteum cyst.

Dermoid Cyst

A dermoid cyst is a benign cyst that contains some tissues like hair, skin, fat, teeth, thyroid tissue, nails, bone, etc. These cysts are also known as ovarian teratomas.
These cysts are seen in women during the reproductive years. Women usually below the age of 30 years tend to develop these cysts. Although not a serious problem, dermoid cysts cause a problem if they rupture. They can then cause infection or ovarian torsion, both of which require medical attention.

Endometriomas

Endometriomas are ovarian cysts that contain a brown, tar-like thick fluid and are also known as chocolate cysts. These cysts develop when the endometrial tissue that lines the uterus gets attached to the ovary and produces a growth there to form a cystic mass.

Cystadenomas

Cysts that develop from cells covering the outer layer of the ovary are called cystadenomas. These cysts do not grow inside the ovary; instead, they develop on the surface of the ovary. These cysts can contain watery fluid or thick mucus-like substance.
Those filled with watery fluid are known as serous cystadenomas, and those filled with thick mucus-like substance are known as mucinous cystadenomas.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

PCOS is a very common metabolic disorder that arises as a result of hormonal imbalance in females. In PCOS, multiple follicles (fluid-filled sacs) grow inside ovaries that contain immature eggs. These eggs then may not reach maturity and ovulate.

Homeopathic Remedies for Cysts

The conventional mode of treatment usually prescribes oral contraceptives or birth control pills in most cases of ovarian cysts. These pills don’t treat the root cause of ovarian cysts; they mask the symptoms by regularising the menstrual cycle without treating the cysts. They may also suppress ovulation to prevent the formation of more cysts.
These pills do not dissolve the existing ovarian cysts, and discontinuing their use can lead to the formation of new cysts. In addition to this, there are some side effects of these pills like nausea, breast tenderness, vaginal discharge, decreased libido, mood changes, weight gain, and migraine.

Ovarian cyst treatment with homeopathic medicine is a holistic approach that treats the main cause behind the problem. Homeopathic medicines are very safe to use among women of all age groups, and these treat ovarian cysts gently without any side effects.
Homeopathic medicine for ovarian cyst can help dissolve the cysts already present and also reduce the tendency to develop more cysts.
These medicines help in correcting menstrual irregularities linked with ovarian cysts and the associated symptoms like bloating, back pain, dyspareunia, etc. Correct and timely use of ovarian cysts can also help prevent surgery in a lot of cases.

Homeopathy for Depression

What is depression?

Depression is a very common psychological health condition characterized by the persistence of severe sadness, unhappiness, low mood, lack of a feeling of well-being, and an aversion towards doing any work.
In some cases, the person suffering from depression may cut off from the society, and isolate themselves completely.
In severe cases, suicidal thoughts and attempts at suicide are also noted. Homeopathy for depression works at a subconscious level to remove the imprints of grief and sadness, and bring about recovery.
Depression is a common, but serious problem that is often dismissed as something temporary or situational. It is essential to talk about it and seek professional help if there is a doubt about a person being depressed. With the right therapies and homeopathic medicine for depression, it can be treated and managed, enabling the person to lead a healthy life.

Does Homeopathy work for depression?

Yes, homeopathy can help treat depression. The homeopathic system of medicine carries an excellent scope to treat depression in a very safe, gentle and effective manner. Made of natural substances, homeopathic remedies are deep acting medicines that work at the psychological level to bring about recovery from depression.
Another benefit of using homeopathy for depression is that none of the homeopathic remedies are habit-forming, or cause dependency. Once the problem is fixed, the person can gradually discontinue the medication, or take it sporadically as suggested by a homeopathic physician. Since conventional antidepressants affect different chemicals in the brain (like serotonin and dopamine), there are chances of drug-dependency. Unlike homeopathy, these medicines also tend to cause side effects like weight gain, nausea, loss of sexual desire, irritability, insomnia and more.

Causes of Depression

Depression is a multi-layered problem, and the exact reason for it not known. The strongest correlation to clinical depression is heredity and environmental factors. The leading causes that play a significant role in causing depression are:

  • a family history of depression
  • stressful events or abuse experienced during childhood
  • grief, like the death of a loved one, or a failed relationship
  • substance abuse (drugs, alcohol)
  • hormonal changes in women (during pregnancy, after childbirth, during menopause)
  • thyroid problems
  • Serious disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, arthritis, dementia also put a person at risk of developing depression.

Symptoms of Depression

  • changes in appetite and weight
  • excessive sleeping or less sleeping
  • perpetual anxiety
  • restlessness
  • constant fatigue
  • sexual dysfunction
  • unexplained headaches or pains
  • difficulty in concentration
  • suicidal thoughts

What is the difference between stress and depression?

Everybody tends to get sad and feel low at some point, and that is a temporary phase that tends to come and go. But when sadness and feelings of hopelessness persist for a long time and start affecting one’s personal and professional life, then it is more than sorrow and stress.
The main difference between stress and depression is that the latter is a more severe and long-lasting condition that requires professional help. The symptoms of depression are much more intense than stress or sadness. It can cause powerful mood changes (extreme despair and sadness), exhaustion and an inability act. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is diarrhea serious?

Diarrhea, in general, is not a very serious problem, but its severity varies from case to case. If a person passes thin stool about three to four times a day, for a duration of two to four days, then it is not a severe condition. However, passing excessive stool multiple times a day can lead to dehydration and the complications related to it.
Also, if a person passes blood or mucus with loose stool, loses weight, or has continued fever along with stools, then it is a cause of concern.

2. I am passing frequent loose stool with mucus from last three months; what does it indicate?

There are many reasons for passing mucus with loose stool. The most common causes include colitis, parasitic infections, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). Detailed case history and investigations are required to pinpoint the exact reason for your problem. Diarrhea can be a symptom of some other underlying problem.
Certain medications can also lead to diarrhea, including antibiotics, antacids, and antidepressants.

3. Can a person get diarrhea from stress or anxiety?

Yes, stress and anxiety can cause diarrhea as a result of the hypersensitivity of the gut to emotional and hormonal responses. A significant example of a medical condition that persists from stress and anxiety is IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).

4. Can allopathy and homeopathy for diarrhea be taken together?

Homeopathy for diarrhea effectively treats mild-to-moderate conditions when coupled with the intake of fluids and electrolytes. These medicines also help reduce the severity of the symptoms. However, in case of severe diarrhea, where the person passes a significant amount of watery stool, allopathic medicines are recommended to prevent severe dehydration and help quick relief and recovery. Both allopathy and homeopathy can be taken together to help manage the problem.

5. Can oral rehydration salts be used along with natural medicines for diarrhea?

Yes, one may take oral rehydration salts along with medicines for diarrhea.

6. For how long does a person need to take homeopathy for diarrhea?

The time duration for which a person needs to take medicines for diarrhea depends on the severity of the problem. In acute cases of diarrhea, medicines need to be taken for few days to a week In case of chronic diarrhea due to conditions like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), parasitic infection, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), the duration of medicines lasts from few months to a year’s time.

Causes of Diarrhea

Diarrhea can be a result of many conditions and factors, but the most common causes of diarrhea include:

Contaminated Food and Water

‘Spoilt’ food and water contain disease-causing pathogens like (bacteria and parasites) which can get transferred into our body and disturb the physiological functioning. This is also known as food poisoning.
Parasites like Giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium cause diarrhea, while Escherichia coli (commonly known as E.coli), salmonella, shigella, and campylobacter are common diarrhea-causing bacteria.
In developing countries, ‘traveler’s diarrhea’ is a common complaint, brought about by these bacteria and viruses.

Rotavirus in Children

A widespread cause of diarrhea in children is rotavirus, a virus that spreads quickly through contaminated hands, objects and surfaces. This virus causes inflammation in the stomach and intestines, leading to severe diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal cramps, and vomiting.

Medications

Certain medicines like antibiotics disturb the balance of gut bacteria by killing both good and bacteria. This imbalance can cause diarrhea.
Antacids often contain magnesium, which can cause the stools to become loose.

Emotional Stress

The gastrointestinal tract has many nerves connected to it and is very sensitively tuned to the nervous system. Therefore, any factors (like stress) that affect the nervous also have an impact on the gastrointestinal tract.
Stress can cause spasms throughout the gut and cause diarrhea.

Food allergies

Food allergies can also cause diarrhea, as the body tries to expel the allergens out quickly.
Lactose intolerance is also a common cause of diarrhea. People who are unable to digest lactose (found in dairy products) often experience loose stools after consuming dairy products.

Digestive Disorders

Chronic diarrhea is often a sign of some underlying gastrointestinal disorder like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, colitis, inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD).

Symptoms of Diarrhea

If you are passing stool for three or more times in a day, and the stool is watery, or loose, then you have diarrhea.
Other signs and symptoms of diarrhea that can accompany loose stool include cramping in the abdomen, mucus/blood in stool, and abdominal bloating.
In case of food poisoning, vomiting and nausea may be present.

Diagnosis

Not everybody with diarrhea needs to undergo clinical tests and investigations. Simple diarrhea with a duration of a few days to a week is not very serious and can be treated with adequate home remedies.
Clinical tests for diarrhea are required when the duration of the problem lasts for a couple of weeks to months, along with the presence of blood or mucus in the stool. In such cases, tests like stool culture, endoscopy, colonoscopy, anti – TTG (tissue transglutaminase ), wheat allergy, etc., are conducted.

Diarrhea and Dehydration

Diarrhea causes a person to lose a significant amount of fluid and electrolytes quickly, so rehydrating salts are usually recommended along with medicines to restore the fluid and electrolytes balance, and prevent dehydration.
The signs to look out for to detect dehydration are dry skin, lightheadedness, less urination, and general weakness. In case you experience such symptoms, it is necessary to restore the fluid and electrolytes balance immediately.

Tips to Manage Diarrhea

Some measures can help manage chronic diarrhea, like:

1. Avoiding milk, spicy food, highly fatty food and high fiber food
2. Increasing water intake
3. Managing stress and anxiety
4. Avoiding alcohol and caffeine5. Washing hands after stool and before eating to prevent infections

Natural Homeopathic Remedies for Pilonidal Cyst

 Homeopathic Remedies for Pilonidal Cyst
The formation of a cyst at the cleft of the buttocks near the tailbone is known as a Pilonidal Cyst. The cyst contains hair and skin debris. It develops when hair penetrates the skin due to friction and the body, considering it to be a foreign substance, forms a cyst around it. The cyst can get infected, get filled with pus, and form an abscess. A pilonidal sinus is formed when a tract begins from the infected cyst and opens on the surface of the skin. Under the conventional mode of treatment, a surgical incision of the pilonidal cyst is advised (which is painful and temporary). Homeopathic medicines for pilonidal cyst is a safe and efficient treatment option. Homeopathic medicines follow a curative approach to treat pilonidal cysts, rather than just providing relief from the symptoms. These medicines help provide relief from troublesome symptoms like pain and swelling. They also help dissolve the cyst.

Causes and Risk Factors of a Pilonidal Cyst and Pilonidal Sinus

These medicines are made from natural substances and raise the body’s self-healing powers to fight the infection naturally. They help manage symptoms like pain, itching, and discomfort. Homeopathy for pilonidal cyst also help in absorbing the pus discharge from the Pilonidal sinus.

Pilonidal Cyst and its Causes

The exact cause of pilonidal cyst is not clear. But a theory states that initially, hair penetrates the skin of the cleft between buttocks. Friction or rubbing makes the hair go deep into the skin. The body, considering this hair to be a foreign article, forms a cyst around it. This cyst may break open and form a tract that emerges on the surface of the skin (which is called a pilonidal sinus). Obesity, inactive lifestyle, excessive sitting, and excessive body hair on the back are factors that predispose a person to a pilonidal cyst. The age group most prone to developing a pilonidal cyst are between 20 – 25 years. Pilonidal sinus is more common in males than in females.

Symptoms of Pilonidal Cyst / Sinus

Sometimes Pilonidal Cysts do not give out any signs/symptoms. However, they usually appear with swelling and pain in the cleft of the buttocks. Redness and itching also appear. A discomfort while sitting also arises. There is also drainage of pus or blood from the Pilonidal sinus. The pus may be white or yellow or may have an offensive odor. Fever may also appear along with the above features in some cases.

Homeopathic Medicines for Fungal Infection

Homeopathic Medicine for Fungal Infection

Fungi are surprisingly diverse microorganisms. While we eat them in the form of mushrooms and bake our daily bread with them, certain strains of fungus can cause infections and disease in the human body. An infection caused by a fungus is known as a fungal infection. Fungi are present in the soil, air, water and some of them are even found naturally in the human body. The introduction of an infectious type of fungus can cause infections like athlete’s foot, ringworm, or thrush infections. Homeopathic medicines for fungal infection works by restoring the natural healing processes that help fight the fungal infections.

Fungal infections can occur in two ways. The first method is when harmful fungi enter the body through direct contact with an infected person or an infected animal or soil contaminated with fungi. It can also spread from using an object infected with fungi like clothes, combs, towels and bed sheets.
The second way is when there is an excessive multiplication of the fungi that are normally present in the body in a small amount. The growth of fungi present in the body naturally is kept under control by the immune system. When excessive multiplication of fungi occurs under certain circumstances due to a weak immune system, it results in an infection.

Homeopathic Medicines for Fungal Infection

Fungal infection can be treated with medicines in a very safe and effective manner as they boost the body’s self-healing mechanism. Homeopathy helps fight the fungal infection in a natural way, reducing the severity of the symptoms and clearing up the infection. Homeopathy for fungal infections helps heal the rashes and reduce symptoms like itching, burning, discharges, and pain. Sepia Succus, Tellurium, Silicea, Graphites, Antimonium, Thuja, Mezereum and Borax are the top remedies.

Antifungal remedies work effectively, without any side effects.

A word on Antifungal Creams

Homeopathy creams for fungal infections are popular as topical ointments to ease symptoms like itching, but their effectiveness in treating the problem is not proven. Since homeopathy is the science of internal medicine that works holistically with the body, at DrHomeo we do not advocate the use of topical medicines for treatment. Ointments like natural anti-fungal cream for yeast infection or homeopathic cream for jock itch are widely available, but they do little in terms of treating the root cause of the problem (internally).

Fungal Infections: Causes and Contributing Factors

A fungal infection is caused by fungi microorganisms like tinea, dermatophytes, Candida albicans, yeast, etc. The most common causes of fungal infections are:

Weak immune system – A healthy immune system keeps a check over the excessive growth of fungi naturally present in the body. If immunity drops, it can lead to opportunistic overgrowth of fungi resulting in an infection.

Excessive sweating provides a favorable environment for fungal growth.

Sharing clothing, bed sheets, towels, combs, shaving razors, etc. with an infected person

Diabetes Mellitus – A hyperglycemic (high in glucose) environment favors immune dysfunction that gives fungi a chance to overgrow.

Obesity – In obese people, the skin folds tend to trap excessive moisture, which can promote fungal growth.

Use of excessive antibiotics – Antibiotics prescribed to kill harmful bacteria also tend to affect the useful bacteria in the body. These bacteria help keep fungal growth in check as a result of inter-related factors. When the concentration of good bacteria decreases, the fungi get an opportunity to grow in excess, leading to fungal infections.

Reduced immunity – Corticosteroids or immunosuppressants, and cancer chemotherapy drugs can reduce the body’s immunity. People with HIV deal with a weakened immunity that can give rise to opportunistic diseases. Due to these factors, the fungi get a chance to grow intensely, which is otherwise put in check by a healthy immune system.

Types of Fungal Infections

A) Ringworms

Ringworm (also known as tinea infection) is caused by fungi of the genera Trichophyton, and epidermophyton. Contrary to what it is called, a ringworm is not caused by any worm. The infection is so called because the ringworm causes the development of ring-shaped lesions on the skin. Ringworm is a contagious infection that can spread from person to person. It causes red, circular patches on the skin along with itching. Homeopathic treatment for ringworm fungal infection helps reduce the intensity of the symptoms.

A Tinea infection can develop on different parts of the body:

Tinea Cruris – It is a ringworm infection on the skin of the groin area.

Tinea cruris is a contagious infection that spreads from direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. It may also be contracted through use of objects carrying the fungal infection, like towels, clothes, etc.
The skin lesion developed as a result of tinea cruris is a red rash that forms on the groin area, inner thighs, genitals, and buttocks. Small blisters may appear along the margins of the rash. Itching, pain and burning in the lesions along with flakiness and cracks may also be present.

Tinea Pedis/Athlete’s Foot

Ringworm infection of the foot is known as tinea pedis (or athlete’s foot). Although any part of the foot can be affected, the area between toes is most commonly affected. Tinea pedis can spread through sharing of shoes/socks of an infected person, wearing tightly fitted shoes, excessive sweating on the feet, or by using locker rooms or showers barefoot. Symptoms of tinea pedis include rawness, cracking, peeling of the affected skin area on feet; blisters, and a burning, stinging, itching in the lesions.

Tinea capitis – Ringworm infection of the scalp is known as tinea capitis.

This is a contagious infection that spreads through direct contact with an infected person. One can also get infected by using objects like caps, combs, hair brushes, pillows that have been contaminated by a ringworm infection.
Red, itchy patches on the scalp are the main symptoms. In severe cases, pustules, crusty eruptions on the scalp along with discharge, and matting of the hair may appear. The scalp also feels painful, and brittle hair or bald patches on the scalp may also be present.

Tinea unguium (Onychomycosis)

Tinea unguium is a fungal infection on the nails that is also known as onychomycosis. It commonly affects toenails and is mostly contracted through use of communal showers and swimming pools. Other places from where this infection can be picked up include using foot tubs, filers, and other tools contaminated by fungi.
The signs and symptoms include thick nails, whitish/grayish, yellowish – brownish discoloration of nails, brittle/ crumbled/ distorted nails, breaking of the nails and pain that gets worse by pressure or wearing shoes. Homeopathy medicine for fungal infection in nails helps strengthen the nail and gradually eliminates the infection.

Tinea Barbae – Ringworm infection of the beard, mustache area of the face and the neck is called tinea barbae.
This infection is usually contracted through contact with an infected animal. A human to human transmission is rare. Sharing articles of personal use, like shaving razors, towels with an infected person transmits the infection.
The symptoms of tinea barbae include pimples, pustules, swelling, and redness of the infected area (that includes chin, upper lip, and neck). Oozing of fluid, pus or blood, itching and pain in the lesions and crusting of the infected area may be present.

Tinea Corporis – Ringworm on the body in the form of ring-shaped or circular shaped lesions.
Under this infection, the skin in the middle of the rash is clear and healthy-looking. The rash is itchy, and blisters can appear at the edges of the lesion. In some cases, the ring-shaped lesions multiply and merge. Tinea corporis spreads through contact with an infected person or pet animal. Sharing objects like clothing or bed sheets can also spread the infection.

B) Candida Infection

Candida albicans is a type of fungi present in the human body in a small amount. The fungus only causes a problem when it multiplies and increases in number. The infection caused by this fungi is known as candidiasis.

Some of the most common Candida fungi infections include:

Oral Thrush – An oral thrush is an infection of Candida albicans inside the mouth or on the tongue. Its commonly seen in infants, older adults and people with low immunity. The symptoms include white, creamy or yellow patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth, tonsils, and gums. Redness, burning, soreness, and pain in the mouth, cracks at the corners of the mouth and a bad taste in the mouth may also be present. Swallowing can become painful if the infection spreads to the throat. Infants can become irritable and have difficulty in feeding if infected. Homeopathic medicine for fungal infection in the mouth helps treat oral thrush and its symptoms.

Vaginal Candidiasis – Vaginal candidiasis is also more commonly known as a vaginal yeast infection. It is caused by the fungi candida, which is normally present in the vagina in a small amount. It causes vaginal candidiasis when it grows to an abnormal amount.
The infection tends to develop as a result of a weak immune system, intake of oral contraceptive pills, uncontrolled diabetes and use of extensive antibiotics.
The symptoms of vaginal candidiasis include itching, burning, irritation, redness, and swelling in the vagina along with a thick white discharge (which looks like cottage cheese). A burning sensation in the vagina during intercourse and urination is also present.

Diaper rash – A red rash that develops on the buttocks of a baby due to use of diapers is known as a diaper rash.
There are many reasons for a diaper rash, but a candida infection is one of the most common reasons. The warm and moist areas between a diaper and a baby’s skin serve as a favorable environment for the growth of fungi.
The symptoms of a diaper rash include a raised rash on the skin of the buttocks. It can also develop on the thighs and genital area. The rash is painful and tender to touch and gets worse on washing. Other skin eruptions like pimples, blisters or pustules can also appear on the rash. The child may be irritable.

Tips to Manage Fungal Infections on Skin

  • Avoid sharing other person’s towels, objects like combs, brushes, blankets
  • Avoid walking barefoot in locker rooms or other public places
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing and synthetic clothing

Natural Homeopathic Remedies for High blood Pressure

Homeopathic Remedies for High blood Pressure

The pressure exerted by blood upon the blood vessel wall while it flows through it (especially the arteries) is known as blood pressure. A blood pressure reading less than or equal to 120/80 mm Hg is considered as the normal blood pressure range.
Also known as hypertension, high blood pressure can be divided into three grades. A blood pressure reading varying between systolic (120-139 mmHg) or diastolic (80-89 mmHg) points towards the prehypertensive stage. A reading of systolic (140-159 mmHg) or diastolic (90-99 mmHg) is Grade 1 hypertension. Grade 2 hypertension refers to a reading of systolic (160-179 mmHg) or diastolic (100-109 mmHg). Grade 3 hypertension is equal to or more than 180/110 mmHg. Homeopathic remedies for high blood pressure works to naturally moderate the body’s functioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why does a person get high blood pressure?

High blood pressure may or may not have a cause. High blood pressure arises without any reason is called primary/essential hypertension. Primary hypertension usually develops gradually over a period of time.
When there is an underlying cause of high blood pressure, it is referred to as secondary hypertension. Secondary hypertension can be a result of kidney problems, thyroid problems, tumors in the adrenal glands and congenital defects in the blood vessels. Secondary hypertension tends to appear suddenly.

2. What factors put a person at risk of high blood pressure?

The factors that put a person at risk of high blood pressure include – a family history, increasing age, tobacco use, being overweight, excessive alcohol intake, stress, too much salt (sodium) intake, diabetes mellitus and a sedentary lifestyle.

3. How can I know if I have high blood pressure?

High blood pressure usually doesn’t cause any symptoms and is often detected during routine medical check-ups. High blood pressure is called the silent killer because it leads to a significant amount of damage to the blood vessels and heart, without any apparent symptoms.
However certain symptoms that appear as a result of high blood pressure include a headache, dizziness, chest pain, nose bleedings, blood spots in eyes and difficulty in breathing. However, these symptoms are not specific to high blood pressure and may appear as a result of other health conditions also.

4. What are systolic and diastolic readings of blood pressure?

Systolic readings refer to the pressure in the arteries when the heart muscle contracts. Diastolic reading corresponds to the phase when the heart relaxes/rest in between the beats.

5. Among the systolic and diastolic blood pressure reading, which is more important?

Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings are important. But the significance of systolic/upper reading in blood pressure is greater after the age of 60 years since it can help identify the risk for a stroke or heart attack. In younger people, the diastolic reading carries more significance than the systolic reading.

6. My upper reading of blood pressure is high, and the lower reading is normal; should I be concerned?

An increase of only the upper reading of blood pressure is known as isolated systolic hypertension. The major reason behind it is stiffening of the aorta. Other underlying conditions that link with it include an overactive thyroid and diabetes. It is more common as a person gets older (especially over 60 years of age), but it may also appear at a younger age. Few serious problems that link with a long-term isolated systolic hypertension include heart disease, heart attack, chronic kidney disease and stroke. So, you should take medicines and follow dietary instructions to manage it and lower the risk of complications.

7. I have a high diastolic reading of B.P. while the systolic is normal, should I be worried?

High diastolic reading in the absence of any risk factors like diabetes, smoking, obesity, kidney disease, etc. is usually not serious. So monitoring the B.P., dietary changes (low sodium diet, fat) and lifestyle changes like regular exercise are needed to manage it. Management is necessary because elevated diastolic puts a person at risk to develop high systolic with advancing age. But if the risk factors are present, then medicine is additionally needed and should be started as recommended by a cardiologist.

8. Can any drugs cause high blood pressure?

Yes, certain drugs can lead to high blood pressure, and this condition is referred to as drug-induced hypertension. These include certain antidepressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, birth control pills, etc.

9. Can stress lead to high blood pressure?

Yes, stressful situations can make the blood pressure shoot up temporarily due to the release of stress hormones. But the link between long-term high blood pressure due to chronic stress is poorly understood and is being researched.

10. I am a 27-year-old male with a family history of blood pressure. Am I at risk to develop the same?

Yes, family history of hypertension does put a person at risk as this condition run in families, but the risk factors vary from person to person.

11. What tests are recommended in case of high blood pressure?

The initial investigations recommended in cases of high blood pressure include lipid profile, sodium, potassium levels, ECG. In some instances, conduction of an echocardiogram is suggested to rule out heart disease.

12. Is high blood pressure a serious condition?

High blood pressure that is not managed correctly carries the risk of serious conditions like stroke, heart attack, heart failure, retinopathy and kidney disease.

13. Will quitting smoking help me manage my high blood pressure?

Yes, quitting smoking will help in managing high blood pressure. Smoking causes hardening of the walls of the arteries and narrows the lumen of the artery that leads to high blood pressure. Stopping smoking can help reduce these changes in the arteries and thus brings the blood pressure down.

14. I am 30 years old age and have a blood pressure reading varying from 134 – 138 systolic and 82 to 86 diastolic mmHg on more than four occasions. Do I need medicines for this?

As per your blood pressure reading, you fall into a category of the prehypertensive stage. No treatment is usually needed if the blood pressure remains below 140/90 mmHg. Only dietary management and adopting an active lifestyle are required, along with regular monitoring of blood pressure. If any risk factors like smoking, diabetes, obesity, etc. are present then they also need to be rectified.

15. What is the relationship between high blood pressure and stroke?

Stroke refers to a condition with reduced blood flow to the brain resulting in cell death. High blood pressure tends to damage the arteries, making them prone to rupture or clogging. Any damage can lead to stroke. Stroke can be of two types –
1) ischemic stroke arising due to clogging of arteries of the brain
2) hemorrhagic stroke due to rupture of arteries in the brain.

16. What is the link between high blood pressure and heart attack?

Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart. If the coronary arteries get narrowed from cholesterol deposits, the blood has to flow through arteries with higher pressure because of the resistance offered by cholesterol deposits. When the coronary arteries get significantly obstructed to the extent where they can no longer supply blood to heart muscles, it can lead to a heart attack (also known as myocardial infarction).

17. Does homeopathy help in immediately lowering down very high blood pressure?

Homeopathy works well to manage high blood pressure in the long run. However, it has a very minimal role to bring an immediate reduction in blood pressure. In such cases, conventional emergency treatment is recommended.

18. I am taking allopathic medicine for high blood pressure from the last ten years. Can I transition to homeopathic medication and stop taking allopathic medicine?

It is not advisable to quit allopathic medicine all of sudden while you start taking homeopathic medicines for blood pressure. This is because the body gets dependent on allopathic medicines to function correctly. If you start taking homeopathic medicine for high blood pressure, initially you will have to continue taking the allopathic medicines alongside. Once the homeopathic medicines start working, then one can gradually transition entirely into homeopathy by reducing the dose of allopathic medications. Gelsemium and Aurum Metallicum for high blood pressure are some examples of homeopathic medicines for high blood pressure.

19. What lifestyle changes can help me manage my high blood pressure?

Certain lifestyle changes can help manage high blood pressure effectively. These include:

  • cutting down your sodium and fat intake
  • eating fruits and vegetables
  • doing regular exercise
  • lowering excessive body weight in case of overweight people.

Apart from these, one must quit smoking and limit alcohol intake to prevent long-term complications of high blood pressure.

Homeopathic Medicine for Elbow Pain

Homeopathic Medicine for Elbow Pain
Elbow pain is a surprisingly common problem that affects the elbow joint. The most common cause of elbow pain is an injury. The nature of elbow pain varies from person to person and majorly depends on the cause; it can be sharp, dull, burning, tearing or shooting in nature. It may be constant or intermittent depending on the cause of the pain. Elbow pain while bending and straightening, elbow pain while gripping, elbow pain when lifting are common symptoms of an injury to the elbow. Homeopathic medicine for elbow pain works by stimulating the body’s natural restorative processes for a speedy recovery.

The Elbow Design

The visible joint between the upper and lower parts of the arm, i.e., the forearm and upper arm, is known as the elbow. It includes the elbow joint formed by three bones and the various muscles, ligaments, and tendons that support the joint. The elbow joint is a hinge joint. The three main bones that make the joint are the humerus, radius, and ulna. Pain arising in the elbow joint or any structures surrounding is called elbow pain. Pain in the elbow can be one-sided (unilateral) or occur on both sides (bilateral).

Homeopathic Medicine for Elbow Pain

In the conventional system of medicine, elbow pain can be treated with the use of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), corticosteroids, antirheumatic drugs (for example, methotrexate, cytokine blockers, JAK inhibitors), or even surgery.
These drugs help in reducing the inflammation by decreasing the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that are responsible for causing pain, fever, and inflammation. But these drugs can also cause some serious side effects like stomach pain, heartburn, stomach ulcers, headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears, an allergic reaction such as wheezing, rashes, liver and kidney problems. Homeopathy for elbow pain, on the other hand, show no side effects and promote natural healing by stimulating the body’s restorative mechanism.

Elbow pain that occurs due to arthritis, gout, injury, overstrained elbow joint, inflamed tendons, and trapped nerves are treatable with medicines. Arnica for tennis elbow is a very popular treatment. Other homeopathy treatment for elbow pain includes medicines like Rhus Tox, Ruta Graveolens, Bryonia Alba, Colchicum Autumnale and Argentum Met.

1. Rhus Tox – Elbow Pain due to Over-Straining/overuse of Elbow Joint

Rhus Tox is a medicine derived from the plant commonly known as Poison ivy which is a shrub. It grows as a weed in eastern USA and Canada. It belongs to the Anacardiaceae family of plants. The medicine is prepared from the fresh leaves of the plant Toxicodendron Radicans. Rhus Tox is a medicine that is indicated for the treatment of elbow pain accompanied with a stiffness of joint. The elbow joint feels hot, painful, and swollen and gets better by warmth and motion-massage. Rhus tox is usually indicated for tearing pains in the elbow joint.

2. Ruta Graveolens – Elbow Pain due to Tendinitis and Bursitis

Ruta Graveolens is derived from the flowering plant commonly known as rue, common rue and herb-of-grace. Native to Southeast Europe (east of Italy), this plant is also found in Croatia, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, and neighboring countries. This remedy is prepared by using the above-ground parts of the plant. It belongs to the Rutaceae family of plants
Ruta Graveolens is the medicine for elbow pain that occurs due to inflamed tendons and bursae. When elbow pains are sore, aching and accompanied with restlessness, and weariness, Ruta Graveolens works well.

3. Bryonia Alba – Elbow Pain that Worsens with Movement

Bryonia alba is produced from the root of the plant called white bryony. It belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and is found widely in Europe and Northern Iran.
Bryonia Alba is for elbow pain that worsens with movement and is tender to touch. Elbow joints are usually red, swollen and hot. The pain of elbow joints is generally sharp and tearing.

6. Ledum Palustre and Plumbum Metallicum – For Golfer’s Elbow

Ledum Palustre is a medicine for Golfer’s Elbow and is derived from a small flowering shrub (commonly known as Marsh tea). Marsh tea is a low growing evergreen shrub that only grows up to a height of one meter. The shrub belongs to heath family and is a native of northern Europe. It is also widely distributed in British America and around Canadian lakes. It is indicated when the pain in elbow extends to the forearm and feels like it is shifting and tearing.

Plumbum Metallicum is a medicine for elbow pain that belongs to the mineral kingdom. It is derived from lead and is used when elbow pain is accompanied by a tingling and numbness in the arm. The pain feels like a bolt of electricity and there is a pain in the elbow when straightening the arm. Pain on the inside of the elbow when straightening the arm is another symptom that points to this medicine.

Causes of Elbow Pain

The causes of elbow pain are usually either overuse or strain as a result of work, sports, hobbies, or accidents. Elbow pain happens to be the most common symptom of elbow-related disorders.
Some reasons for elbow pain are as follows –

Sprains and Strains: Sprains are referred to the stretching or tearing of ligaments that connect two bones together. A strain on the other hand is a stretching or tearing of the tendonn or muscle.

Tendinitis: Fibrous tissues that attach muscles to bones in the elbow when overused, can cause Inflammation and irritation of the tendons. This condition is known as Tendinitis.

Bursitis: Bursae are fluid-filled sacs that act as cushions to the bones in the elbow. Any inflammation or injury caused to the part can lead to Bursitis.

Tennis Elbow: Tennis elbow develops as a result of inflammation of the tendons in the muscles of the forearm, at the point where they attach to the outer elbow joint. This is also known as Lateral Epicondylitis.

Golfer’s Elbow: Golfer’s elbow refers to an inflammation in the tendons at the point where the tendons attach the muscles of the forearm to the bony part on the inner elbow. Medically this condition is known as epicondylitis.

Throwing Injuries: Also called “baseball pitcher’s elbow,” these injuries occur due to an overuse of the elbow when a ball is thrown. Other sports involving similar mechanisms tend to produce similar injuries. These involve elbow structures like tendon detachments.

Radial Nerve Compression: This is a condition in which the radial nerve that passe through the elbow joint gets compressed or pinched.

Ulnar Nerve Compression (or entrapment): Pinching or compression of the nerve by swelling or displacement.

Ligament Tears: Elbow ligaments that get torn due to excessive force on the elbow joint can cause elbow pain.

Injuries to any Elbow Component: Trauma and pain to any component of the elbow joint or adjacent structures that work with with the elbow joint (forearm structures like the upper arm and shoulders) can cause elbow pain.

Broken Arm: Fracture in the parts of the arm bones (including the humerus, radius, and ulna) cause extreme elbow pain.

Stress Fractures: Any non-displaced fracture of the bones that form the elbow joint can cause elbow pain.

Dislocation of an Elbow Component: Dislocation of any bones or other structures such as tendons or nerves that form or pass through the elbow joint can lead to elbow pain.

Carpal tunnel Syndrome: Carpal tunnel is a condition that causes numbness, pain and tingling in the arm and hand. It happens when one of the major nerves of the hand (known as the median nerve) gets squeezed or compressed as it goes through the wrist.

Elbow Fractures: Any fracture of the bones that form the elbow joint (humerus, radius, ulna) cause extreme pain.

Osteoarthritis: It is a condition wherein there is a loss of cartilage at the end of the bones in the elbow. This can lead to elbow pain.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: It is an autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation. When this condition develops in the elbow, it can cause chronic pain.

Osteochondritis Dissecans: This is a condition wherein the blood supply is cut or decreased in the elbow.

Olecranon Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa (present on the tip of the elbow) is known as olecranon bursitis. The inflammation causes pain.

Infections of the Elbow Joint: Infections in the elbow joint can include cellulitis, abscess formation, septic arthritis, or infections in the other structures, that can cause elbow pain.

Tumors: Any cancers or masses that develop in the joint structures in the elbow, such as bone tumors, can cause pain.

Gout: Gout is a very common but complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone. It is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness in the joints.

Sometimes, a pain in the elbow may occur due to an injury to the vertebra. This injury may irritate the nerves that service the upper arm. Such pain, the source of which is not at the elbow, is known as referred pain.

Contributing Factors For Elbow Pain

Some of the main risk factors that can cause elbow pain include:

  • Trauma to the arm and elbow may result in vascular compromise (inflammation of the blood vessels due to an injury). Trauma and repetitive stress may also result in swelling and nerve compression or entrapment. Even sleeping on one’s side with the elbow bearing chest weight may result in daytime elbow pains.
  • Overuse of the joint and too much stress at a given point on the elbow joint. Overuse is noted in people who have an excessive amount of elbow movements during work, sports, or other similar activities. For example, individuals who work with repetitive motions of the elbow during, say, a product assembly line may develop some types of elbow pain (bursitis, tendinitis).
  • Not warming up before strenuous activity. Muscles and tendons are more flexible and therefore less prone to tearing when athletes warm up before engaging in an intense sports activity. Not doing so can increase the risk of tissue damage. Such damage often leads to a painful condition known as tennis elbow.
Sports like tennis and gym exercises (like weight-lifting) that require repetitive actions can also cause elbow pain.
  • A ligament or tendon tear or even dislocation or fracture of one of the bones in the elbow joint, work accidents, contact sports such as football, and auto accidents can lead to irritation, and occasionally to a severe elbow injury.
  • Improper use of sports equipment, such as a tennis racket that is too small or too large for the athlete, or a racket that is not appropriately strung (for example, the head surface is too tight or too loose, or the racket is too heavy for the user).
  • Inflammatory and autoimmune diseases can cause joint pain, putting people with problems like rheumatoid arthritis at risk.
  • Working in physically repetitive occupations, such as carpentry, bricklaying, instrumental music, clothing construction, plumbing, assembly-line production, or intensive computer work.
  • Infections of the elbow structures increase the risk of elbow pain. Also, direct trauma to the elbow, such as colliding with another player or falling onto the elbow can cause pain.

Symptoms of Elbow Pain

  • stiffness, swelling, and soreness of elbow joint;
  • tenderness of the elbow joint;
  • difficulty in grasping and lifting objects;
  • pain that radiates either upwards or downwards from the elbow;
  • impeded movement of the elbow joint i.e inability to straighten or bend the elbow.

Managing Elbow Pain

For quick relief from elbow pain, there are certain home remedies of rest, using ice packs, and compression of the joint area.

  1. Drinking ginger tea, using heating pads, and massage the area gently can be used to reduce elbow pain.
  2. Anti-inflammatory foods such as green leafy vegetables, berries, citrus fruits, high potassium and magnesium foods (coconut water, avocados, sweet potatoes, bananas) help the body to repair the damaged tissue. Combined with elbow pain exercises, one can manage the pain.
  3. Elbow pain when lifting light objects may be related to the posture. Sometimes pain occurs when we lift something at an unnatural angle.
  4. The “RICE Method” is commonly used to relieve elbow pain. It includes the steps Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation.

Crohn’s Disease: Types

1. The first type of Crohn’s disease is inflammatory and can cause simple erosions in the bowel walls.
2. The second type of Crohn’s disease leads to the formation of scar tissue within the walls of the bowel. The inflammation gets healed by the body, but scarring leads to obstructive symptoms and bowels are unable to move properly.
3. The third type of Crohn’s disease is penetrating in nature, under which the inflammation travels through the bowel walls and forms connections with adjacent organs.

Based on the involvement of the part of the alimentary canal, Crohn’s disease presents itself in many forms:

1. Crohn’s Colitis refers to the involvement of the large intestine.
2. When only the small intestine is involved, it is referred to as Crohn’s Enteritis.
3. Active disease of the Ileum (last portion of the small intestine) is known as Crohn’s Ileitis.
4. When the disease affects both small and large intestine, it is referred to as Crohn’s Enterocolitis or Ileocolitis.

A fairly common disorder, Crohn’s disease has no cure, and conventional medications (like steroids and immunosuppressants) are used to hinder the progression of the disease. Corticosteroid drugs are used to reduce inflammation that occurs in the active stage of disease, but prolonged use of these drugs can lead to ulceration of the stomach, making the person more prone to infections.
Another treatment option is to suppress the immune system with the help of immunosuppressive drugs, which tend to cause side effects like diarrhea, loose motions, and vomiting.
Remedies for intestinal inflammation can gradually reduce the inflammation of bowels and provide symptomatic relief. These work in the form of highly diluted chemicals that are charged to act as messages to stimulate the body’s restorative processes.

They are Safe

The medicines for colon diseases are taken in small doses over a continuous period, which helps improve the efficacy of the natural substances that m. This slow-healing action helps treat the problem on a long-term basis while also reducing the symptoms.

A Holistic Approach

Crohn’s disease is often an autoimmune disease, and homeopathy aims to treat the problem by moderating the immune system. With homeopathy the symptoms are not suppressed; instead, the cause is identified through the presentation of symptoms. Colitis treatment associated with Crohn’s disease involves moderating the over-active immune system that prevents further aggravation of the inflammation. Steroids used in conventional treatment tend to suppress the symptoms of inflammation, and do not help resolve the underlying problem.

Natural Remedies

An ancient 200-year-old medical science, homeopathy uses cures found in nature to help restore the natural healing processes of the human body. Remedies for intestinal inflammation are made of natural substances. Unlike conventional treatment where immunosuppressants are used to manage the symptoms, homeopathy focuses on long-term, natural treatment of the same.

Individual Treatment

Every individual who turns to homeopathy is treated according to their specific symptoms. Homeopathy works in synchrony with the body’s natural restorative processes to treat a disease.
For example, a person who develops a risk towards Crohn’s disease as a result of smoking needs to quit smoking while taking treatment for Crohn’s disease, while a person genetically predisposed to develop the condition may require a separate set of medicines along with adequate lifestyle changes.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of Crohn’s disease is not clearly understood, though the following factors are said to contribute to the manifestation of the disease:

Autoimmune origin: In cases of autoimmune diseases, the immune system misdirects a response, causing the cells to destroy healthy body tissues. In Crohn’s disease, the body’s immune cells begin to damage the GIT (gastrointestinal tract) that results in inflammation and ulcers.

Heredity: Crohn’s disease has a tendency to run in families through hereditary factors. Therefore chances of developing Crohn’s disease increases if there is a family history of Crohn’s disease.

Environmental Factors: Environmental factors such as pollution and an inadequate diet (lacking in nutrition) plays a significant role in the development of Crohn’s disease. The disease is more common among people residing in urban areas.

Smoking: A family history of Crohn’s disease coupled with smoking habits puts a person at an increased risk to develop the disease. Research suggests that Crohn’s disease develops more commonly in smokers as compared to non-smokers. Stress & infections tend to worsen the condition.

Age: People between 15-30 years of age are more susceptible to developing the disease.

Crohn’s: Signs and Symptoms

Crohn’s is a chronic disease, so a person may experience symptoms during the active phase of the disease, and no symptoms at all when the condition is in remission phase.
The main symptoms of Crohn’s disease include:

Persistent diarrhea as a result of the disease varies from mild to severe level. The person may have mucus discharge or blood in the stool.

Abdominal pain due to Crohn’s disease varies from person to person. The pain is felt in the lower right side of the abdomen.

Anemia: Since the disease causes loss of blood through stools, it can lead to anemia.

Loss of appetite: An unexplained loss of appetite can be a result of Crohn’s disease. Similarly, weight loss becomes a symptom resulting from loss of appetite.

Ulcers: The inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease leads to the formation of ulcers in the gut. These may bleed, and the blood shows up in the stools.

Arthritis: Research shows that chronic inflammation in the intestines or colon (main characteristic of Crohn’s disease) can trigger the body’s immune system to start an inflammatory process in the joints or tendons.

Other symptoms include:

  • mouth sores
  • inflammation of eyes (uveitis) and skin
  • fever and fatigue

Complications of Crohn’s Disease

Certain complications linked with Crohn’s disease include:

  • Inflammation of the eyes
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Anal fistula
  • Anal fissures
  • Arthritis
  • Pyoderma gangrenosum
  • Osteoporosis
  • Intestinal stricture
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Colon cancer

Management of Crohn’s Disease

No substantial evidence identifies the food products that cause inflammatory bowel diseases, but avoiding certain foods and beverages can help manage the symptoms and overall health during the active stage of the disease.

  • Eating periodic small meals rather than big meals is highly recommended for people who have Crohn’s disease.
  • Fluid intake, especially water, should be increased.
  • Multivitamins and nutritional supplements can also be added to a doctor’s recommendation.

Foods to Avoid with Crohn’s Disease

Fatty Foods: During the active stage of the disease, the intestines are unable to absorb fat. Consuming fatty food during the active phase of the illness can diarrhea, and so a low-fat diet should b maintained.

Dairy Products: Since Crohn’s disease damages the digestive tract, it can lead to lactose intolerance. People who develop lactose intolerance are not able to digest lactose (milk sugar) found in dairy products. A treatment diet for Crohn’s disease involves increased fluid intake and a decrease in specific food groups.

Alcohol: Alcohol is not safe for anyone with inflammatory bowel disease as it can cause further complications.

Spicy foods and caffeine should be avoided as they can trigger gastric symptoms like pain, bloating and gas.

Fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains that have high fiber content should be avoided as they are difficult to digest when the gastrointestinal tract is inflamed.
